CUSTOMIZING YOUR RECLINER COMFORT
A shopping guide to recliner features & functions.

One of the great things about going recliner shopping is all the features and options that are available. From modern mechanisms to hidden storage to massage, there are lots of choices to consider. Here's a look at some of the features that can make your recliner even more comfortable and convenient.

Recline Mechanisms
Sure, all recliners are designed to recline. But the actual recline function is triggered in different ways on different chairs. Basically, your choices (like cars) come in two categories: manual and automatic.

Many manual recliners have the familiar handle or lever. A gentle pull

activates the mechanism, and you just lean back. As a rule, you'll have two or three recline positions to enjoy. Want to put your feet up? Pull the handle a bit more, and the ottoman comes up and locks in place.

In place of a handle, many newer recliners have a discreet "touch button" located just below the arm. Sometimes the button isn't even a button: it's a pull cord tucked between the arm and seat cushion. Still others recline with simple push on the arms. These "press-back" designs offer the perfect recliner "disguise" by eliminating the button or handle altogether. You'll see this feature on many club, high-leg and wingback style recliners.

Automatic recliners do all the "work" for you. These chairs have an electric motor (and a cord that plugs into a wall outlet) and a "rocker" switch. Push the switch one way to recline, the other way to sit up. You can stop at any of an infinite number of positions along the way.

Chaise-Style Recliners
If you like the feeling of head-to-toe support when you stretch out, look for a recliner with a "chaise" design. You'll have uninterrupted support to keep you
completely comfortable.

Wall Hugging Recliners
This is a huge feature! In rooms where space is limited, choose a recline mechanism that lets the chair hug the wall. That way you'll have more decorating flexibility as well as a more efficient use of floor space. How does it work?
Simple. As the chair reclines, the seat moves forward. With a good wall-hugging mechanism, you can recline fully in a chair placed just three inches from the wall.

Choose Your Favorite Motions
In addition to reclining, you can choose other relaxing motions. If you like the feel of a porch swing, look for a glider mechanism that offers a gentle back-and-forth motion. If you like a rocking chair motion, you're sure to enjoy a rocker-recliner. There are even mechanisms that combine all of these motions, so you can always be on the move.

Last but not least, there's one more motion to consider: swivel. Look for a swivel base that allows you to conveniently "aim" the chair wherever you wish.

Hidden Storage
Today's better recliners include many convenient storage features, including
hidden compartments and side pockets for magazines and remotes. Look for
additional features like built-in cup holders that remain out of sight when not in use.

Removable Backs
Because of the metal recline mechanism, recliners tend to be heavier than regular chairs. Want to save your back? Look for a model that allows the back
to be completely removed for easier transporting. This feature comes in handy whether you're moving your recliner across the country or across the hall!

Massage & Heat
Many recliners are available with built-in massage and heat options. Massage functions range from basic to fully programmable, so be sure to get a hands-on demonstration. Massage is a wonderful way to add a relaxing touch of therapy to your day. Look for a UL listing... and a control wand that's convenient and easy to use.

Home Theater Seating
In addition to the latest, most fashion-forward styling, home theater recliners
have special features for your viewing pleasure. Cup holders are a given, and storage options are popular. Some models even offer add-on trays for added convenience. Wedge-shaped side tables allow you to create a graceful curved
row of seating, with plenty of space for popcorn and snacks. Look for tray and table surfaces that are dark in color and easy to clean.

Lift Recliners
For folks who need a little (or a lot) of help sitting down or standing back up, a "lift" function is the perfect solution. Lift chairs have a quiet-but-powerful electric motor that raises the seat to a nearly vertical position. They also function with
all the ease and convenience of "automatic" recliners, described above. As you can imagine, these chairs are a favorite among seniors. Be sure to look for a "battery back-up" feature that safely returns the chair to a seated position in the event of a power outage.

Big Man Recliners.
These special recliners are a big hit with big men. The scale of the chair is larger
and more comfortable, and the frame is reinforced for extra durability.

More Features, More Fashion!
Today, the selection of quality recliners is more fashionable than ever. Choices include traditional styles, high-leg designs, wingback chairs, theater seating and many more. So whatever your décor, from country to modern to anywhere in between, you can find a recliner with the features you want.
But remember that many of these new features are "hidden.' Be sure to ask
your salesperson to point out - and demonstrate - the recliners that have all
the bells and whistles you're looking for!
